Helen Holmes was born in Kingston, Massachusetts, graduated from Smith College in 1887, and subsequently pursued graduate studies at Radcliff College and the Massachusetts Agricultural College (now University of Massachusetts at Amherst), where she was one of the first women to attend classes. Ropemaking firm, Plymouth, Mass. Founded in 1824 by Bourne Spooner. A mill was opened in Welland, Ontario in 1905. In 1938 the firm purchased Consumers Cordage Company of Canada and in 1947 acquired Federal Fibre Mills of New Orleans.
